2020 NEVOSH Panama Mission
Posted on 10/6/2020 by Carl Sakovits
In January 2020 our group returned from our seventh Northeast VOSH mission to Panama. The Cocle Hotel in Penonome was our base of operation and we traveled 40 minutes daily up the hillside to the Instituto Carmen Conte Lombardo to host our clinic. We again ran our second very remote clinic in the high hills of Ol'a 90 minutes into the mountains. The week was extremely successful and equally enjoyable. The slightly smaller group size of sixty VOSH volunteers and fewer specialties made it easier to house, manage, and interact with fellow missionaries. The optometry and dental students were hard working, talented, and very enjoyable, a joy to have with us. We also had a good number of former students returning as doctors this year. We partnered with The Dorado Rotary Club of Panama City once...

Panama Mission 2018
Posted on 5/23/2018 by Carl Sakovits
Wow, what a week we had! 72 volunteers traveled to Panama the third week of January for our 31st international mission. In the rural community of Lidice we examined 3076 of the area's neediest people. Our services included eye examinations and glasses, general medical care, dental care, audiology with hearing aids, and women's health care. The makeshift clinic was set up in a large school and ran incredibly well due to the fine work of our hosts, The Dorado Rotary Club in Panama. We are excited to be returning to Panama again in 2019 and grateful to all of my patients who donated glasses and have expressed interest in this work I do. Thank you!...

Volunteering in the Appalachians - 2015
Posted on 10/31/2015 by Carl Sakovits
Tuesday, October 6, 2015 Dear Friends, I just returned from volunteering in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia and cannot get the images out of my mind. Over the two hour drive from the airport I watched the typical American suburbs transition into some of the most horrid living conditions I had ever seen in this country. The endless stream of houses and trailers weathered beyond repair lead us to Grundy, Virginia. Like much of Appalachia, the economy in Grundy was built on coal. Generations had relied on the mines and some even moved here for the high paying secure jobs, but then things changed. One by one mines closed followed by most of the local businesses. Nothing moved in to replace the void in employment and homes could not be sold. People were trapped, and then devastation...
